CVHS raises over four thousand dollars for families

CVHS has raised $4,612.93, with history teacher Jackie Stone taking first place, raising over $600. Every donation was greatly appreciated, no matter the amount. Thanks to CVHS and the community’s generosity, the Adopt-a-Family program continues to support families during the holidays and beyond.

As the holiday season rolled around, the annual Adopt-a-Family program at CVHS had finally begun. Hosted by Castro Valley Outreach (COV), a local nonprofit organization, money donations were collected from Dec. 1 to Dec. 13, to help provide gifts and holiday cheer for families in need.

Where does the money go? Donations were collected during fourth period and counted before being deposited into a special bank account. Once all donations had been collected, the leadership class used the funds to purchase items for the families, where families picked the items up from school.

As the Adopt-A-Family program continues to grow, there are plans to expand its reach and provide even more support to families in need. “We would like to extend the program as far as the money will take us. We try to help 20 students each year,” shared activities director Thomas Maloney.

In recent years, the program has grown to include basic home supplies for families thanks to the community’s generosity. “The past few years we have been pushing for a springtime event as well.  We understand that some families need help throughout the year and want to support our community as much as possible,” said Maloney.

Leadership students played a big part in making this program successful. They worked together to collect and count the funds along with shopping for the items on the families’ wishlists. Their efforts brought the school and community closer while helping those in need. “It’s really great that the school is taking this initiative to help those who are less fortunate and bring together our families,” said leadership student Allen Chin.
