CVHS badminton beats Arroyo

Tapped, hit, and bashed, the heavy pitter patter of shuttlecocks can be heard as they bounced back and forth around the main gym at CVHS. “Warm up for an exciting game,” said coach Lotan Yeung. Our school’s boys and girls badminton team was preparing for a sweep against Arroyo High School on March 6.

The competition would be 15 varsity games, three games per each match type. There were two types of matches: boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles, and mixed doubles. Each match was a best of three.

The conclusion of the competition was Castro Valley Trojans 14 to Arroyo Dons 1, a strong win for the Trojans.  Thirteen of the games were won 2-0, so the varsity matches went quickly. Frequent cheers could be heard from the stands as the varsity teams battled it out. 

The most outstanding match within the competition was Logan Lei Chong and Elise Fong versus Josh Arambula and Eva Rong in mixed doubles. The game was a smash, with Chong and Fong winning in the first two matches 21-2 and 21-4.

The closest game was Tyler Wang versus Justin Truony, playing the full three matches. Both were equally matched, playing excellently with energy. “It was a good game, I needed to take it slower,” Tyler said. The Trojans lost the game 21-23, a tense finale that had lasted through the tournament.

After the competition which had consisted of varsity games, junior varsity games were up and badminton members were selected from the bench to play quick matches. After the badminton games, everyone else who wanted to play could do so before the day concluded.
