Discover ‘Summer fling’ in Grease

The CVHS drama department will put on “Grease” as its spring musical. The musical follows the story of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, who have a summer fling and unexpectedly end up at the same high school.

With around 100 people involved, both onstage and off, many people were able to find an interest in participating.

“My favorite part of being a student director is making a creation of art and having a community included,” said student director Natalie Bennett.

“Grease” originally opened on Broadway in 1972, but has since been adapted into a movie rendition, as well as the Fox television special, “Grease: Live.”

“Grease” tells the story of Sandy and Danny, who meet at the beach over the summer and fall in love. Their romance is cut short when summer ends, but in a twist of fate they end up going to the same high school. The musical portrays Danny and Sandy navigating through what could or couldn’t be, leaving them wondering if “a summer fling really don’t mean a thing.”

Everyone involved in the show, including actors, tech crew, costume team, staff, and more, has been putting a lot of effort into getting the play show ready. Whether it’s late nights or weekends, both students and staff have been working tirelessly.

However, “Grease” isn’t just about working hard. For many, it is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.

“The musical is fun because we get to spend hours with people that we didn’t know before,” said senior Lillian Manno.

Senior Zac Furber-Dobson, who plays the role of Danny, agrees with Manno. “Spending hours with all these people is an interesting experience. I love it,” he said.

With classic songs such as “Greased Lightning” and “We Go Together,” alongside vintage costumes and detailed sets, “Grease” is guaranteed to transport you back to the 50s.

“I like that it’s a different type of atmosphere and it makes the show fun,” said senior Zander Ditona, also playing the role of Danny.

After months of hard work from the cast, crew, and staff, this musical is one you definitely shouldn’t miss. The play runs in the Center for the Arts on March 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m., and on March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

  • I watched the play, and it was so good. I loved the songs, everybody was so good at singing. Afterwards I went home and started binge-listening to Grease songs on youtube, but it just wasn’t the same.

Wow, I watched the play and let me tell you… This was AMAZING. I watched the teasers beforehand and I could not be more as excited as the people that were performing. The play was seriously incredible and it just blew my mind how hard these actors work throughout the whole process before the show. I am incredibly proud of my friends that worked there and all of them that sang and danced.

  • The play was great! I was able to watch the live musical “Grease.” The acting and singing was on point and the whole crew did an amazing job making sure that the show was set up correctly and that everyone did their part in the play. I was impressed on how well the actors on stage were able to perform as well as when they had their lines memorized. Everyone who was involved worked very hard to put on a show that did make you feel like you truly were in the 50s. I myself did help out with the CFA staff in organizing the CFA room before one of the shows and was surprised when I saw how well developed the structure of the play was and how well it was set up to meet everyone’s needs. When I was there, everyone on all fronts participated in some way and worked hard to set up the chairs, tables, paintings, etc. Not to mention, the choir did an amazing job in playing their instruments in the cutting scenes. The next time a play premiers, it wouldn’t be something you would want to miss.

I saw the teasers and couldn’t be more excited to see activities like this take place at our school. I feel the cast and crew did an excellent job at their parts and roles. The story was amazing and well-paced, especially aiming at a grease feel and look. I do hope to see more plays like these in the future.

  • This musical was very fun to work on. The cast and crew did amazing jobs! And from the directing aspect is was very fun to work with the cast!

I didn’t get the chance to watch Grease, but I wish I was able too as I heard it was an entertaining experience. The musical seemed like it was a fun to watch story with a cast of some familiar faces. I heard from some of my friends who had the opportunity to watch it that it was a great musical that was a fun experience overall. If I had the chance to go to this musical I definitely would have!

I went to the teasers twice, when I first watched the teaser, I was in awe. I’ve never seen a live musical/play like this before. I felt excited and intrigued, I also ended up watching the full show on Saturday, and it was truly amazing. The cast was so engaging and talented. The whole setup of the show was amazing, I would watch it over and over again. I was extremely impressed with this show. I can’t wait to see more of these types of shows/musicals, it was truly an experience, and something I won’t forget.

I loved Grease and I really liked that the actors got to speak their minds for this article. I think it really captured the main benefits of being a performer in Grease and also did a good job advertising the musical.

Although our time with this production has sadly come to a close, I want to truly congratulate everyone that was involved for putting on such great performances. Having the opportunity to be in community with other students has been an incredible and unique experience. The long hours that so many people have poured into this production is wild and there seems to be an endless list of people who contributed in so many ways, big and small. Drama, choir, tech theatre class, Auto shop, Sculptures, Musicians, ASL, the CFA staff, everyone who simply came to watch, and the list goes on. Being able to participate in a wide variety of different programs here at school will hopefully continue to go on strong. Especially during this time of hesitant reconnection, I hope that we as a school can help foster more postive relationships within the community and with others.

I saw the trailer during my 4th-period class and I honestly thought it was amazing. The acting and storyline were great and the singing was incredible. To think these actors are my class/schoolmates, these people are very talented, directed by students, acted and sang out by students. Sadly I was not able to attend the full show.

The Musical was very fun to watch, and both casts did an amazing job. The teasers built up hype for it, and it did not disappoint. After watching it opening night, I wanted to watch it again, which I did.

  • My friend is going. He told me It’s fun and I should come too.

  • I’m going to see this play on Saturday. I heard the songs are really good, so I’m excited to watch it, especially since I’ve never seen a CVHS school play before.
