Tragedies happen every day, we need to solve all of them

In times of trouble, everyone groups together to help the people who have been hit the hardest. However, no one ever seems to realize how much they need to help until something major happens. For example, people from all over the world joined together to help Japan after their three major disasters, which of course is wonderful, however, millions of people from all over the world are being kidnapped and sold into slavery but people from all over the world have put together no big relief to help these people.

Now, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t help Japan or that people are horrible. What I’m trying to say is that we are ignorant to a lot of major tragedies that are happening all around us which makes us unable to stop what could be an easy fix.

For Days of Diversity, my class saw a riveting presentation about human trafficking and the people who are hurt the most from it.  The presentation covered different types of trafficking and one man’s attempts to somehow change the situation. This presentation really made me wonder why there aren’t more people reaching out to help innocent humans trying their best to get by from being sold into modern day slavery in the cotton, sugar, and sex industries.

I bet half the people at CVHS did not even know that more than a million people are living in slavery right now, unable to change their conditions. Or, that children from poverty stricken countries are being tricked into trafficking scams simply because they want a better life for themselves and for their families.

So why aren’t people doing more about this terrible issue? There’s many simple ways that you can help to stop companies from buying their employees and create a slave-free world. For example, you can go to callandresponse.com and write letters to your favorite companies demanding that they have slave-free products or take pictures of your favorite clothing items and upload them to show that you won’t stand for products made from slaves.

If we are living in a time when everyone knows that slavery is a horrendous thing, why can’t we rally together as a world and save innocent human beings?
