Olympian wins big in annual contests
This 2016-2017 school year has been very rewarding for the Castro Valley High School newspaper. The Olympian won 37 different awards from off-campus groups such as the Quill and Scroll Society, Journalism Education Association, California Press Women and California News Publishers Association for videos, pictures, stories, and columns. This is the most awards The Olympian has ever won.
Olympian staff members were pleased with their success this year. Editor-in-chief Halley Lin-Jones received eight different awards from five different off-campus groups for her stories as well as photos and is very appreciative of her efforts as well as the rest of the class.
“I feel so grateful that my work was recognized and evaluated by real journalists in the industry, and I’m proud of everyone in our class for the success we’ve had in this year’s contests. For me, I have felt most proud of the CNPA award for my columns. To have those really personal opinion pieces supported was truly touching and gratifying,” Lin-Jones explained.
California News Publishers Association awarded Lin-Jones first-place honors in both column writing and news photography. CNPA also honored artist Da Di for an illustration and copy editor Anastasia Le for her feature story about Castro Valley natives Eugene Yoon and Arthur Renowitzky.
Video editor Desiree Broome won four awards: two for videos, one for sports writing, and one for a news photo.
“I’m really excited about winning the awards! For me to have been a part of the class for three years and to win so many awards just shows how worth it all of the work was,” Broome said.
