Quiz Bowl comes to CVHS

Quiz Bowl, a Bay Area trivia competition for high schools, will come to CVHS on Feb. 23. The competition will be hosted by the school’s very own Quiz Bowl team in the 700 Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Basically, all these high schools from all over the Bay Area compete against each other in trivia. The main things are art history, U.S. history, European history, biology, chemistry, physics, and literature,” said Kristie Huie, captain of the CVHS Quiz Bowl team.

CVHS Quiz Bowl team will have two teams competing in the tournament, with each team playing five to six rounds. In the game, 20 toss-up questions are asked. Each correctly answered toss-up question gives the team a bonus question to answer for additional points. At the end of the 20 toss-up questions, the game concludes and the team with the most points wins. However, each team only has five seconds to answer each question.

Recently, the CVHS Quiz Bowl team competed at the University of California Berkeley in the California Cup.
“It was really fun competing against really smart people from other schools,” said Huie.

The teams are ranked according the number of points accumulated; individuals are also given point scores and the highest scoring participants win awards. The competition has two leagues, junior varsity and varsity. CVHS Quiz Bowl participates in the junior varsity competition and is looking for new members to join it.

“People can observe what we do and if they like it they can join. Because there are a lot of seniors this year, it would be good to have freshmen, sophomores, and juniors join Quiz Bow. We answer questions and have fun,” said Huie.

Quiz Bowl meets in room 122 during lunch on Mondays.

“It’s our first time hosting a tournament. Come out and support the CV Quiz Bowl Team!” said Huie.
