Ukulele Club attends festival at Chabot College

The CVHS Ukulele Club went to the Ukulele Festival at Chabot College on April 1. At the festival, club members enjoyed various performances and met fellow ukulele enthusiasts and players.

“You can’t go wrong when you mix ukuleles, Hawaiian food, and a great club together. It all amounts to a great time,” said Matt Shimizu, the club’s vice president.

The Ukulele Club was started in 2011 for students interested in playing the ukulele, participating in music-related events, and meeting other students who enjoy playing the Hawaiian instrument.

“I began this club because I wanted to get people more involved in music,” said Jasmine Mangabay, the club’s president.

The club welcomes each and every person at all skill levels, so you don’t need to already know how to play the ukulele in order to join.

“All you need is an interest and desire to learn,” said Mangabay.

During club meetings, students can learn and practice songs on the provided ukuleles. Songs that have been played at the meetings include “I’m Yours,” “Drops of Jupiter,” “Not Over You,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “You and I,” “Better Together,” and “Hey Soul Sister.” Students can also request songs to be taught during the next club meeting.

The Ukulele Club is perfect for students who want to learn how to play the instrument. The club members create a friendly and helpful environment, so beginners will not feel intimidated in the least. Since the ukulele is a fairly easy instrument to learn how to play, many club members are able to learn a whole song during in the course of one meeting.

The Ukulele Club meets every other Wednesday at lunch in Room 201. Anyone interested in the ukulele is recommended to check out the club.
